It's definitely not half as horrendous as most critics would have you believed. Sure the gore images were unnecessary and OTT for some palettes but there's an enjoyable story here. Personally the creep-o-factor came mostly from the old witch and straight from hell creatures.
The 2004 version needs to be rewatched for a fairer comparison. Out of memory alone, yes, Perlman is *the* Hellboy but this reboot doesn't deserve to be dismissed heedlessly. The only department it lacks jarringly than the Perlman's edition is comedy. There just wasn't enough zingy one liners to make this as entertaining as its predecessor.
Still, miles better than the overrated Deadpool. Reynolds - now that's a try hard, really unfunny guy trying to portray the opposite. Surprised and somewhat annoyed that this has gotten such a low review. It's nowhere near as bad as the reboot of Evil Dead, now that's a real stinker
