Although the show started off on a high in Season 1, whereby all the episodes were entertaining, intriguing, fascinating, etc. the show quickly starts dipping in quality in Season 2, picks up again in Season 3 and then just hits its lowest in its final season. Don't let the 100% fool you but do make your mind up, entertainment is subjective after all. This is just my two cents worth.
The negatives
- Dr Kristen Bouchard becomes an insufferable protagonist. I understand a huge part of her role is to demonstrate how the balance between the complexities of the human pysche against our imperfect vulnerabilities (science vs religion) affects our perceptions, perspectives , choices, etc. but the writing leaves her with no redeeming qualities. She's a terrible mother, an unfaithful wife (a bit of a whore really), hypocritical, selfish, dishonest and just an overall bad person.
- Dr Kristen Bouchard's children are the dumbest and most annoying characters I've watched in a program for a long while.
- The character, David, becomes dull. We get it, you're conflicted because you want to be a priest but you're horny all the time blah blah...
- I hate the woke messaging when it switched to Paramount. Apparently, black people can do no wrong, white men are evil or weak, and if women do wrong or can't win, it's because of the influence of men.
- It's evidently clear it's a show created by old people because "technology bad" "influencers bad", etc.
The three saving graces (pun not intended):
Positives:
- The mysteries are pretty cool.
- Dr Leland Townsend is the most interesting and exciting character on the show. Michael Emerson is a great actor, especially so when playing deceptive villains. I like that they gave the character a redeeming quality that ties into his philosophy of free will.
- Ben is a good character. He's brilliant and funny. In moments of weakness, he maintains his decent and likeable nature inspite of the challenges he faces.
