*people who loved this film are really out here saying that those who hated it don't understand the film. Well, that's rather disingenuous because I do understand the film and I still hate it.*
The writing team really asked, "what are all the themes that people love in a story?" and then decided to just shove them all into this film without regard for if it would work well. In this film, there were too many ideas and thoughts that hinted at even the most basic of plot movement, but there was no commitment to make it happen meaningfully. We are left utterly unsure of what just happened and feel as though we had just been robbed of the our most precious non-renewable resource: time.
This film is a mess, to put it nicely. This film starts out promisingly, we have our protagonist, the underdog troublemaker of the village who wants to prove himself. And as such, we think that this is going to be a hero's journey story. This is not it because as soon as we learn the protagonist's desire to be accepted by the village, we enter into another slew of events that feel misplaced and meaningless until the end without it ever coming back to the original premise.
The character development is weak and we find it excruciatingly difficult to ever care about why anyone is here. Anyways, we find out that Henry Lau's character is a long lost prince from some witch who lives in a mythical forest, but then nothing else is done with this reveal. He's basically the chosen one and yet this amounts to nothing in the story of this film. Also, the other male protagonist is out to kill the king's advisor, but makes NO attempt to hide it. Like dude, we get it but try a bit.
Oh. And the only female characters who (somewhat) matter die, so there's that, too.
Save your time and watch something else.
