The traditional Faust legend - a story that goes nowhere by way of somewhere - juxtaposes here with a film that goes nowhere by way of nowhere ... at least in terms of conventional narrative. These moody sensibilities, oneirically woven into the images, animal voices (including human), and poetic structuring make for an understated and satisfying film.
My only dissatisfaction was often the music. For while story and image filtered through relatively modern orientations, the music mostly seemed cliched, even softly sentimental. While this can work if effectively contrasted with the new, the jarring served no purpose that I could see and selections from the now notable repertoire of alternative modern sonic creations would have been welcome.
