I give it two stars (would prefer 2.5 if available) because the actors did a decent job with what they were given to work with, which in some cases was not much. Terribly, terribly slow moving film, and poorly edited in my opinion because there were too many redundant scenes and too many that just didn’t connect with the rest of the film. The run time could have easily been cut by 20 minutes. I liked the premise of an “every man” struggling to overcome his own weaknesses and deal with a virtually impossible situation that he just can’t give up on, and there were a few intricate and subtle plot points that clicked. The best part of the film was Damon’s relationship with the young girl Maya, she was very good and it was made clear Damon’s character Bill was trying to make up for his neglect of his real daughter by being a father figure to her. That dynamic created an effective what could have been tragic effect for Bill and his actual daughter. Damon, however, performed his role too wooden and he tired to create a stereotype of a lifestyle and way of life he clearly doesn’t understand. The worst part was the ending. So many modem films seem to totally fall apart in the last 15 minutes, and this is is a prime example. I hate the indefinite ending concept that Hollywood seems to love. If I am going to invest 2 hours or more watching a film, it’s the director and writer’s job to create closure and tell me what happened. It’s just lazy film making in my opinion.
