I think this movie is entirely over criticized. I for one watched it the first time after having finished all 7 seasons of the show way back in 2015. Admittedly, a bit lacking when it came to introducing familiar names as younger faces. The introduction of the black protagonist and riots was completely unnecessary in this movie and was obviously a plug to appeal to a broader audience. After having watched all 7 seasons again in 3 weeks in what was a life sucking but worthy marathon, I watched this movie again and was beside myself at how well Michael Gandolfini chillingly portrayed a younger version of his father and that final scene with the opening song of the series original Sopranos series just iced the cake. All the younger versions of the familiar faces, especially Silvio, were excellently done. Extremely well made prequel in my opinion. Doesn’t get 5 stars because of previously mentioned nuances I personally didn’t care for. A must watch after reminding yourself of all the characters in the original show by watching a few episodes first of the original series.
