Annabelle comes home is...not a horror movie. It's a thriller with ghosts in it.
And relatively harmless ones at that.
Horror is about the threat of impending doom. A movie professing to be about a possessed doll and malevolent spirits should has all the tools it needs to put that fear of eternal damnation into it's audience.
Annabelle consistently let's its audience off the hook when it comes to its suspense. While it's great at building up to an event, the payoff isn't there when the event occurs. Because this happens so often in the 90 minutes the movie takes to watch, even the suspense itself suffered as you no longer believed the story teller.
If you want to know what Annabelle is, see the movie. Once. Its not great, but it tells a story. It's a story we kind of already knew, but it's there.
Someone called it a "speed horror film". They're right. It's like horror and speed dating made a baby. You don't know the characters enough to like them, and you wont believe they're actually in any danger, but the completionists among us will want the backstory and the character are just dumb enough to actually do what they need to do to let this doll have her way.
Fyi...you kind of expect a demon to be powerful. Let down.
2/5 for the horror. 3/5 for the story.
