I was let down with the movie. The scenes didn’t have a whole lot of fluidity to them, especially toward the beginning. They cut out characters that I felt were important to the plot, and through that also cut out plot points. Furthermore, I don’t think that any of the characters were “in character.” They changed the personalities of the main cast and that took a lot of substance away from the story.
I know that changes are pretty much a necessity when adapting a book to a movie, but this didn’t feel like the same story as the book.
Hollywood often romanticizes mental illness and I definitely felt that happening a few times. I also don’t think that they did a good job of representing Finch’s mental health issues. It wasn’t consistent with what we saw in the book or with the actual symptoms of bipolar disorder.
