Now this might have been a personal point, but for me, the reading is dull and boring at many points in the story, and I get that not everything in a book can be back-to-back action and thriller, but I felt that those very boring and dull moments in the story take center stage, not to mention what I felt as unnecessary characters such as Abner, who adds nothing to the story other than that he is a rebel who helps Samuel get to his parents in New York City. One thing I will give it though is its very detailed descriptions of every action, object, and character, which helps flesh out the story, but in the end, it just made me feel like extra words to read that weren't really important to the story.
