Well developed characters. A village is torn apart in its efforts to deal with the German occupation. There are no stereotypes of either or any of various sides presented. Accurate portrayal of the communist v. socialist v. nationalist resistance. Also the varying shades of resistance and compromise and collaboration that people attempted in an effort to ride out the storm of war.
