#Thangalaan: Sure Shot Winner
Thangalaan is a Tamil action-adventure film directed by Pa. Ranjith and co-produced by Studio Green, Neelam Productions, and Jio Studios. Vikram plays the protagonist, and Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, Hari Krishnan Anbudurai, and Sampath Ram appear as supporting characters. Set against the backdrop of the British Raj, the plot revolves around a fierce tribal chieftain who earns the wrath of a sorceress after supporting a British commander in his search for gold in their community.
The biggest backbone of Thangalaan is its casting. Starting from its lead character played by Vikram, all the way to the supporting artistes, this film is peppered with some awe-inspiring performances. First of all, hats off to Vikram for the effort he has put into bringing his character to life; and at no point would you see Vikram, the star, peek out of the character. His performance can be ranked among the top three in his career, if not already his best. Other performances that would amaze you in this film belong to Parvathy Thiruvothu, an actor who keeps raising the bar with every screen presence, as well as Pasupathy, who finally got a space after ages to deliver us the performer that we know and love. A dark horse performance belongs to Malavika Mohanan, who just thrills and amazes as Aarathi. If this one character had not worked with the audience, the entire premise of the film would have fallen flat, but call it director's brilliance or a performer's evolution, but this performance is a core element that makes the magical realism in this film both convincing and effective. Daneil Caltagirone is a formidable presence in the film, and has delivered a convincing performance.
Thangalaan is a well-thought-of and well-produced experience in both visual and cerebral storytelling. What this film has managed to do is prove that magical realism and period dramas can work as well as any mass masala flick as long as the story is delivered with conviction. All in all, a definite theatre watch to feel the full effect of what the film's team has put together.
