(Some spoilers)
I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out for nine years so it’s an understatement to say I was excited. Overall I think the plot was an interesting summary and interpretation of the original lore especially with the use of characters. I didn’t necessarily love the idea of changing the animatronics appearance upon first hearing about it but when I saw it in the film it wasn’t such a drastic change. I enjoyed the references like how Bonnie’s first kill was in the closet he frequented in the original fnaf game and the small details like the drawing on the wall being accurate to the games.
HOWEVER, I did have some things I didn’t love. For a franchise being entirely based on animatronics that were possessed by dead children there was very little gore, not a huge setback at face value but it definitely took away from the fear factor. I was hoping it would be somewhat like the vhs tapes which is just a personal preference but the lack of any gruesome visual death was disappointing. I was also hoping the nights would get more scarier as the movie progressed like in the games but this again, is a personal preference and isn’t such a big deal. The jump scares weren’t anything special which is okay but still disappointing. The two things i really didn’t like about this movie were the spring trap scene and the scene between the animatronics and Abby. The spring trap scene was extremely underwhelming in comparison to what actually happens when spring traps are set off, the lack of blood and screaming felt boring and like the buildup of the movie was for nothing- I can see from the viewpoint that this movie was possibly made to be more like a thriller than a horror but of all the moments to actually have some gore this would be it. As for Abby, the whole dynamic of her character interacting with the animatronics in a friendly manner isn’t too far fetched as they would want to lure her but the pillow fort scene as a whole just made me cringe- I think I would have preferred if the animatronics lured her in and befriended her in secret as it would build up more suspense.
Overall it was okay, not entirely what I was hoping for and if the option arose I’d still pick a 6 hour fnaf lore video over the fnaf movie but I wouldn’t be against watching it again. The casting was excellent (apart from markipler not being a part of it but that’s just the way the cookie crumbles).
