If you're in the crowd that rates movies 5/5 solely based on the visual appeal and for the action, hey you do you.
But for those of us who have an IQ above 70, I can tell you this film is in no way shape or form a masterpiece - its a garbage heap in every sense of the word. In fact, I don't even need to compare it to its 1998 animated predecessor to explain why it is SO bad.
For starters, the whole narrative of the story was undermined the moment they introduced Mulan magical "qi" powers that enable her to do basically whatever she wants at any given moment or time. She is basically unstoppable - all potential sources of conflicts are over before they even began. Why bother having villains when you know Mulan can just go all out and end them without even trying? Seriously, that's just bad writing.
Speaking of writing, the film falls flat in just about every single factor in that department. There's no sense of coherency; one scene will just jump to the next with no setup or transition. The end product just ends up being choppy and jumbled. The dialogue is awkward too, and quite frankly, cringe. I know the audience is supposed to be indulged in dramatic moments, but they too fall flat in this film, because again of the improper setup. Not a single character felt memorable; Mulan herself comes out so wooden and devoid of personality despite being in a movie that bares HER namesake. What she DOES succeed in, however, is perpetuating in the wave of Mary Sues that corporations love to gobble up nowadays.
Congrats, Disney, you've concocted yet another soulless, money-grabbing cash-grab on top of the countless garbage live-action remakes of classic films.
Save yourself the trouble and don't waste your time watching this film.
