A weak attempt to cash in on the original. What made The Shining so great was its realistic story of an American family getting caught in the supernatural world. The scares were chilling but not cruel. Doctor Sleep attempts to get its fear factor by kidnapping, torturing and murdering children. It fails to inspire anything near the level of suspense as The Shining. By the time Doctor Sleep returns to the Overlook Hotel at the 2 hour mark, one can't wait for the film to be over.

The plot of the original Mary Poppins (parents being too strict and detached from their children ) was one which children and parents could related to from their own life experiences and, particularly for parents, leave the theater with a better understanding of how to be a better person. The plot of Mary Poppins Returns updates what was a feel good, self-help story line into a cliched tale of corporate greed: parents and children are losing their home and being thrown out onto the street. The children, although knowing that they will soon be homeless, happily go about their lives in song and dance. Please! The songs in the original Mary Poppins were instant classics that are still well known today. The songs in Mary Poppins Returns are instantly forgettable. Mary Poppins Returns IS a tale of corporate greed: Disney's attempt to cash-in leveraging the name recognition of the original Mary Poppins with a sub-par plot, actors and soundtrack.
