The book by itself really isn't that good. Without watching the tv show, it seems scattered and not well put together. if i hadn't of watch the TV show first, i would not have enjoyed reading the book at all. the only "good" thing about reading was getting some clarity to some of the characters sexuality/finding out which characters were meant to be gay and some of the written explanation for some of the moments between the two main characters. other than that, if you arent a fast reader, you will be sorely disappointed wasting hours reading this. however, for me , it only took a couple hours so i didnt mind so much.
the entire relationship between Dong Hua and Bai Fenjui is not included in the book except for a couple brief mentions, all the backstory between other characters is missing. all the stuff between ye hua and susu on mount Juniju is missing. i could keep going. if you are a lover of the show, and you want more from the book. you will be very upset reading it. just dont.
on top of that, it is very disappointing to find out that this popularized story was plargarized from another author who intended it to be LGBT centered and have two male main characters (the show definitely blotted out almost all the gay characters which is sad, wouldve been so much better if they had left at least the supporting characters who were supposed to be gay but alas heteronormative culture persists)
however, i will put out there that the original work is not translated. so as an english reader, you really have no other option to access this story. unless you somehow learn to read in chinese and find the original work, wherever it may exist. if you do, all the more power to ya.
since the plagarized work is already a published tv show and book, i mean not much can be done about it now. i personally refused to buy the book and read it for free because if i can resist giving any more money to the thief i will. however, who knows if i counteract this by watching the show on netflix....welp
