Excellent movie! I really enjoyed this movie. Sadly I didn’t watch it when it first came out in 06, but watching it recently gave me some nice throwbacks to the 2000s.
Kim Ah Joong was amazing. During the time of this movie, her acting career was still very young but her portrayal of Hanna really brought the character to life. She was able to show many different emotions of the character, with highs and lows throughout the movie. Her awkwardness in many scenes was hilarious. Of course, her singing was extremely impressive, much better than a lot of the kpop stars and groups I could remember in the 1990s to 2000s. She definitely has singing talent; hitting high notes is seamless for her.
This movie shows the harsh reality of the korean entertainment industry. We see Ammy, who only has looks and some dancing, but no talent whatsoever. She’s all about stage presence, pyro, and fancy camera work to make her marketable and attractive. Also, she’s full of herself.
Then we see Hanna, who is a gifted singing talent, but since she’s fat and ugly no one cares about her. She sings behind the scenes for Ammy during live concerts, and does part time phone sex on the side. She ultimately decides to go through full blown plastic surgery to create a new pretty version of herself to win someone’s love. Along the way, she becomes a famous kpop sensation because she’s now the full package.
I love the back and forth of comedic and serious moments in this movie. They’re well managed and sprinkled at the perfect moments.
Hanna is a great example that we continue to live in a judgmental society. Unfortunately, money still matters. People rather see a no talent pretty girl in a skimpy outfit walking around a stage because that’s what sells, not an overweight girl with natural singing talent. Feeling like she exhausted all options, she changed herself to be more accepted by society, but only to lose her own identity. She felt like she was living a deceitful life, fooling others to think she is the perfect girl. It goes to show we should stop trying to impress others when we should be loving ourselves.
This movie is a good reminder to stay true to ourselves. Also, even if we’re in an advantageous position don’t bully others or bring them down even more. We never know what other people are going through. I hated the end when Hanna couldn’t go through with the concert but the producer just kept talking to her and never gave her a chance to explain the pain she was going through. Again, the harsh reality of the entertainment industry that can cause so many physical and psychological problems for young stars.
