It's a good game but it is more like baby's first Pokemon game. There are some great new mechanics introduced but it is essentially the original generation one game which is a very old and dated game. The original 151 Pokemon are nothing to write home about, yea sure, they are the original but they get so much attention, I am tired of them. Most of my favorite Pokemon are in future generations. Because it is limited to the original 151, variety is really lacking.
Because it is gen 1, it got gen 1 problems: there is only one ghost family, poison, rock and bug types are garbage, psychic types are over powered, there are no dark types available at all, and the handful of Pokemon that are re-typed to fairy are all rubbish.
Because this is strictly a gen 1 remake, many familiar features are stripped out. Breeding, abilities, held items and day/night cycles are not featured in this game. Abilities and held items are the big ones since they add layers of strategy to the game and they are not present.
The game itself is super easy and got plenty of hand-holding to push you forward. Your partner Pokemon is a buffed version of its wild counterpart, has perfect 31 IVs on all stats and has access to a very versatile and powerful set of tutor moves. The partner Pokemon is overpowered and you can clear the game easily with it along if you choose (even against Brock, Partner Pikachu leans Double Kick very early on).
The candy mechanics breaks the game. It can add up to a flat 200 points on a Pokemon stat so a weak Pokemon can turn into a powerhouse after feeding it a bunch of candies; heck a 10 point increase would already be a big boost in power.
The catching mechanics is fiddly and is best done in handheld mode where you can use the gyroscope to aim with. This gets really bad when the Pokemon jumps/warps around nonstop. Or is a Zubat that wobbles all over the place.
This game is cute but for a veteran Pokemon fan, the only thing attracting them is the nostalgia of a clunky gen 1 game.
