It's funny, I would describe myself as only a railfan in passing, and not at all a diehard, but I absolutely love this show! A fine example of one of the narrowest niche programs you could possibly think of -- Japanese railroad systems -- and it's simply very, very engaging in its presentation. The attention paid to technology and economics is nicely balanced with the attention to the impact of rail travel on Japanese culture and history. Also, just like virtually all of the NHK World travelogues, the cinematography of the views of Japan simply can't be beat. I've only been watching for the past eighteen months or so, but I am now a fan for life!
