The device of counting down the days makes this book a compelling read. The author makes a convincing argument that most of Japan's leaders had no intention of surrendering, and that Truman's decision to use nuclear bombs played a significant role in influencing Emperor Hirohito's choice to capitulate. He also touches briefly on the Japanese sense of themselves as superior - even invulnerable - warriors, a subject that invites further reading. At the same time, it can be troubling to learn the depths of the fanaticism and arrogance of those who came to power during that time, realizing that there are likely just as many people in the United States today, with the same delusions of superiority and grandeur.
