My mom let me watch this when I was 5 bc she wanted to see it before we saw the 2003 version (which we watched it 2 years after it came out in theaters). She was curious about seeing my reaction. I don't remember much except being sad for the rats and loving the song. I'm going to view it again, and see if my mind is changed. I still love rodents and most animals. I remember liking the movie but thought of it as a friendship / tragedy movie.
