Spoilers. Most people probably won’t agree with my simplistic view, but this is my review of Wakefield.
Howard is a horrible person. Not just because he disappeared (that’s bad enough) but initially, he only became interested in Diana because it was a competition to him. She was with Dirk, and he decided he wanted to be with her. What he called a ‘genius plan’ was evil. He took her decision away by making Dirk seem like a terrible person, when he was the absolute worst! He even admitted that after a year of being married, he wondered if he’d only married her because the competition was so exciting.
Then, after living in that attic for almost a year, and watching Diana and his daughters live the life he hated so much ... he didn’t seem to show any real interest in being with her. Well, that is until he saw Dirk come over for dinner. I felt like it was just another competition for him. She was finally moving on, and she seemed happy. That was when he got himself cleaned up, and walked in that house like he’d only been gone a few hours (and not a year) and announced, “I’m home.” Then the movie goes off. No explanation... just, “I’m home.” Maybe I’m missing the true meaning of this movie, but if I am, I doubt I’d watch it again. Once was more than enough.
