What I like most about the show is that it shows us how we really are. I love star trek but I always found it too Utopian, where The Orville shows us how we really are and uses aliens to show other cultural tropes. It does take a little getting used to because its like star trek but once you understand its a reality more like our own then it really comes into its own. Its serious and funny as well as thought provoking. If I could refer you to one episode it would be the KRILL.
