If you haven’t read the book, the movie is horrible. The soundtrack at times (it being the 80’s and all) was very out of place for the setting and scenes. Not to mention plenty of fantastic music that would have much better fit the movie was changed or removed entirely. The pacing was bad and the movie was very hard to follow. It felt more like one of those playlists on YouTube where people try to stitch together YouTube videos of movie scenes in a playlist to form the full movie for free. However, the worst part is how the producers barely got the main points of the book across. The heavy surveillance wasn’t at all as potent in the movie as it was in the book. Despite this, the casting and visuals were amazing. John Hurt was exactly what I envisioned Winston Smith as. The costumes and sets were fantastic and were dull and grey, which excellently fits the mood of the book. Overall, 5/10. Definitely a movie deserving of a modern remake. Just read the book if you want to experience Nineteen Eighty-Four.
