I actually watch and truly enjoy his show every week. But I was disappointed that this past show on Bias in Medicine did not include People with Disabilities who are consistently denied adequate- let's not not even think about quality- health care delivery. Medical schools do not teach about disability health care management unless a medical student or resident chooses that as an elective for study. It is important to note here that People with Disabilities make up the largest protected class of people in the U.S. with over 60 million individuals. So the health care needs of over 60 million U.S. citizens are neglected.
Most hospitals and doctors' offices do not have weight scales for persons with mobility issues and don't have exam tables that are capable of lowering to accommodate wheelchair users or persons with other types of mobility issues. Since medical management of disabilities is not provided in medical school, physicians do not know how to properly assess for disability related health concerns. This is an issue that needs to be addressed and no longer ignored.
If you are going to cover bias in any issue, such as medicine, housing, transportation or employment, please make certain to include all groups. Otherwise, aren't you being biased in your presentation?
