Recently, Jerry Craft, the author of this horrendous piece of literature, visited our school and came by other schools around the district for an author visit. My close friends and other students have been talking about this book for a couple of weeks, so I picked up a copy at our school library to see what all the exhilaration was about. And I have to say, it was just another run-of-the-mill, unoriginal children's book.
Why? In my judgment, it was a very unimaginative story plot. It follows the story of Jordan Banks, the main character of the book. He attends RAD, a primarily "white-occupied" school. The rest of the book follows a relatively bland story plot like "Jordan has some difficulties adjusting to RAD" and "Jordan meets a variety of other students at the school including Andy, an obnoxious 'jock." (Seriously, authors always overuse the word "jock" when describing 13-14-year-old middle schoolers.)
Also, the children in the story follow vastly unrealistic dialogues for a bunch of 12-year-olds. Personally, I abhor authors who try to relate to children who are literally 40 years younger than them and have possibly never stepped into and experienced an American middle school environment in decades.
Overall, the "New Kid" is extremely overrated, tedious, and sincerely, senseless.
And if you genuinely disagree, pick up a copy, get comfy, and read for yourself.
