*spoilers *
I've read so many reviews about this film being confusing and a slow burner and they are right but that's what makes it so good and really unsettling. The audience experiences the same as the characters by seeing everything from only their perspective. You have no idea why these completely plausible yet unlikely events are happening but you feel the characters fear, distrust and paranoia. Non of the characters are friendly or likable . there's no hero to come along to save the day. Even the "good guy" doesn't give you any comfort or reason to trust him. It's a collective of pretty normal selfish people with their own agendas being forced to rely on each other as everything falls apart for a reason you never really find out.
A selfish son who can't offer comfort to a younger sibling.
A a daughter who doesn't understand or really care because she only wants to finish her show.
A mother who is rarely affectionate to her kids in a crisis and prejudice and negative towards everyone. (Loved that she's played my Julia Roberts who is usually the one in films who you are supposed to like)
A dad who is a bit useless who confronts this only when his kid is in danger.
Another Dad who is nice but untrustworthy whilst placing trust above strangers dispite it not being the best for his own family
And his daughter who is scared and trying to appear stronger and more mature than she actually is who is also prejudice and pretty self righteous.
You can't like any of them because they're not good people. Not especially bad but just normal and selfish.
It's a refreshing change to end a film knowing that everything is not ok. It's disturbing to live it through their eyes only. The situation gets progressively worse and it's not going to get better for the characters even as they find out tiny bits of what's happening.
Couldn't give 5 stars because I got a bit annoyed at the camera panning in on their terrified faces every time they saw something and then cutting to a different scene. Also I don't really understand why they are kind of unharmed when everyone else is gone. My favorite bit was the self driving cars scene. Really thrilling and a fun addition to the main theme of them speculating and sniping at each other. Really freaky movie that makes you think. Would definitely recommend but not for everyone and it will test your patience.
