All the negative reviews seem really unwarranted and actually seem all unjustified, but we all know how much Pokémon fans like to complain about nothing most of the time. This time around it’s because the game feels lazy and too close to the original??? The game even says the minute you launch it, “Developed by ILCA and Based on the original game by GameFreak”
As of right now, I’ve played the first 10 hours of the game since my late night launch on 11/18 and till writing this review today on 11/19.
The game stays very faithful to the original but feels fresh all the way through. It’s visually stunning and runs exactly how it did on the original game which is a lot to ask for since Sword and Shield was taking the games a different route in the quality department. The game feels like a Pokémon game again and thats all I wanted. I feel like if they went towards the 3D world feel instead of the top down chibi view, it would of ruined the experience and upset a lot of core fans to this generation.
- There’s dynamic story improvements that really puts the original story to rest.
- Event legendaries return (yes the ones with item codes, not free downloadable shinies you get from mystery gift).
- Pokémon follow you again and it works this time! (better than SwSh and LG).
- The entire underground has been reworked and improved on, which was a big feature in the original game.
- Character customization has been added which was never in the original.
- New and better looking battle rooms to battle in (even scripted locations like the battle in the Pokémon school)
- Visual aesthetics in the over world that make the world lively (I.E. the shadows of clouds you can’t even see in Jubilife city and the water on Route 218, there’s more but I don’t want to be marked for spoilers lol)
- Improved Pokémon animations and trainer animations which really breathes life into the game.
- Small progressions hints so you don’t forget what you have to do when you come back after a long time, but can also be ignored completely for purist
- New Pokétch features, which was another core feature in the original.
- The contest has been completely reworked and has been nothing but fun compared to the original.
- An actual sub story which was actually never really in the original.
- The inclusion of the Union Rooms again, which was a big thing back in the day and now with improved internet connections (rip WEP) trading and battle has never felt better
There’s many more major and minor details I missed like regular quality of life improvements and some spoilers I don’t want to get into. The game overall feels like a remade masterpiece. They stayed true to the core generation and really delivered this time around. Old fans can experience the old game with a new coat of paint and new fans can play an original Pokémon game in the new era. So please don’t let the negativity shade this one. Just get the game and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed (unless you hate Pokémon lol).
