Being passionate about music, this one was just up my alley. For a music lover, this is a treat. From a ballad to Indian classical to jazz to opera to rock and whatnot, the music is the soul of the movie. It is such a shame that not everyone would be treated to it with Dolby. This movie was meant to be watched, listened to, and felt on a big screen. The high point is the cinematography, editing, and screenplay, which are synonymous with poetry. Every frame is a painting in itself with the production given keen attention to. The detailing and lighting are so beautiful, it sets the mood for a particular scene completely. Every character has his own theme music, which is quite distinct. That the scores are not too overpowering and overbearing is another plus. The downward slide is that none of the songs is memorable, though the music is top-notch.
The story is not the run-of-the-mill one but is also not something to write about. In fact, the second half of the story kind of droops after a promising first half. Picking up newbies for a dream project, ARR did manage to take a huge risk. Though, the newbies are not disappointing. In fact, 8 minutes into the film, Ehan Bhat looks straight into the camera and you know he's won you over. He is good looking (read gorgeous), has a great voice, magnetic personality and is able to hold the movie on his delicate/inexperienced shoulders. Adilsy is beautiful. She is the narrator of the story despite playing a mute in the film. Her act seemed forced to me and I somehow could not empathise with her character, Sophie, as much as I could with Ehan's Jai. The other characters are convincing in their roles too- Lisa Ray, Manisha Koirala, Diwakar Pundir. Ranjit Barot is menacing. It is Tenzing Dalha who I hope gets more projects. He is adorable as Polo and plays his act with complete conviction.
It is not a flawless film but is quite enjoyable. The flavour of the movie stays on your tastebuds long after you have relished it (I watched the movie two days ago, btw). It is not just a love story but also a story of self-discovery, self-expression, and sustenance. And if music flows in your veins as it did in Jai's then you will be as moved by this one as I am.
I would give the movie a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ and ❤ for Ehan Bhat.
