Those commenting on the films odd pace...it’s a Senegalese-French film. Just because the US has dulled film into a mindless digestive blur doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to follow.
To those who are “outraged” — what did you think of Kids or Thirteen? It’s the same concept with immigration and the new era of technology’s influence and implication.
The girls in this film did an amazing jobs theirs acting was great and I truly hope everyone saying that what they did was shameful really think about what that means and how that affects these young actors. Be better. Stop shaming the girls and their parents’.
Also this movie does not by any means glorify the actions of these girls as they try to act older and perform racy dance routines. People seem really scared to talk about the fact that kids are growing up so quickly and that so much media has put pressure on them to be something they’re not. This reminds me a lot of what it’s like to grow up and try to figure out who you are versus who you are expected be by the media versus who your parents want you to be. The age 11 of the characters seems quite young to be doing these things, but this is happening in middle schools in America. It has to be acknowledged and discussed.
Was the marketing Netflix did trashy and inappropriate? Totally and completely. But that is no reason to write off an entire film.
And those with issues of the angles and “lingering” yeah it was super awkward and the girls look super awkward because this is not how our society should be, but it is. Those shots also directly mirror shots and angles in music videos and films. It’s intentionally done to mimic and make the viewer uncomfortable.
