I was surprised at the reviews that saw this as comedy or an allegory on climate change. I was overpowered by it as a statement on the state of US democracy - a modern variation on Orwell’s 1984. Meryl Streep was a surrogate for a re-elected Donald Trump with his subservient minions that reject facts and science for re-election prospects. The movie, while full of hyperbole, brings home the message of what happens if democracy fails. Yes, it also warns, indirectly of inaction on climate change but to me, the warning was more powerful about letting a functioning democracy collapse to be replaced by a voluntary dictatorship. Yes, I expect that you could still vote in the movie. But what is the point if no one is informed or cares. A very powerful message.
