Terrible book. Here’s what I imagine: Grisham was asked to do a sequel to The Firm. For whatever reason , he couldn’t squeeze one out. His publisher said, “Remember that book that involved the kidnapping in Libya you sent us back before you were really famous and stuff? Just change the characters’ names to Abby and Mitch McDeer, tack on some pages that links it a little to The Firm. Just for funsies, add a couple of pointless teaser chapters about a guy who is mysteriously killed while he’s on death row, and then just leave the readers hanging. We won’t even edit the book. You know, cuz your name is Grisham. People will scoop it up because we’ll market it as a sequel to The Firm, even though it’s not remotely related, the history of the main characters make zero sense, and the characters really don’t resemble the characters in The Firm at all.” Grisham just signed the big check and moved on to the next project. Really: don’t bother with this one. The end is very unsatisfactory, and the book is mostly scenes of people flying to different countries and talking. It’s BORING.
