I am lucky enough to be able to visit Chester Zoo as well as watch the programme on TV. Chester Zoo is one of the best in the world, the animal enclosures are huge with outdoor roaming padocks for almost all of the animals. The animals are not pets and it is grossly unfair to suggest that the staff do not care about the animals, they clearly do! No sane person keeps inflicting vet attention at the first sign of illness to their animals at home and it would be equally daft to do it with the animals in their care. They clearly keep a good eye on the animals and call in the vets when necessary. Yes some animals tragically die but that happens all the time, with most of the animals the human interaction is limited and they can't keep jumping into the enclosures everytime there is a percieved problem - far too traumatic for the animals! We only see what Channel 4 deem to be TV worthysoof course it's going to be the highs and lows rather than the every day events. Chester are doing a superb job and the professionals who monitor zoological institutions across the globe have viewed it as one of the top 5 in the world every year for more than 20 years!
