Didn't read the books so I'm judging the series as its own standalone creation. It did everything I wanted it to and more ,the casting is lovely .;Jessie Mei Li and Archie Reneaux look so adorable together like innocent puppies . The Crows are funny and witty and effortlessly cool ,the Darkling is handsome and enigmatic and ambitious ;the kind of villain that I would have instantly fallen in love with in 2010 .

I am only on the 3rd episode and I love everything about it so far . The storyline ,the casting ,the diversity ;everything!! I love the fact that it is confident ,in its escapism , especially when its based on romance novels which are the very epitome of escapism! It takes it one step further by making the cast diverse as if to say ,this is a world that everyone has the right to escape into it and that's something I never knew I needed. I also think the loud indignation of the so-called history buffs will also give it enough buzz and publicity for it not to be ignored so that's well played. Anyone intent on brushing up on history would not turn to the original romance novels or this series which doesn't pretend to be historically accurate , what it does manage to do is to be entertaining. It puts one in mind of those fusion sagueks that Korea is so good at ,the type set in historical periods but with modern sensibilities.
