This film has a special place in my heart as I read the novel when I was only 13 and it forever raised the bar for me for what science fiction could achieve. Lynch's visionary portrayal of this masterpiece was betrayed by studio execs who butchered the films final edit in the name of the almighty dollar as film run times over 2 hours were generally frowned upon at the time. Creative geniuses are almost always at the mercy of unimaginative stuffed suits who mess things up in the 11th hour with their limited bourgeois mindsets. I give the film 4 out of 5 stars not because of any fault on Lynch's part, but because of the studio's autocratic ineptitude and short sightedness about film length and audience attention span.
