Modern Cinema serves two general purposes: to entertain and to bring out various emotions in characters. Soorarai Pottru serves the latter one. Yes, Soorarai Pottru is an emotional roller coaster and I cried my heart out in certain scenes. Surya has made the role his own like he did with Vaaranam Aaayiram and a host of other movies. However it would be wrong to credit him with the whole success of the movie. It was Sudha Kongara's inspired direction that laid the foundation. The casting is brilliant. Urvashi, a stalwart in her own right does a magnificent job with the role of a mother. Aparna Balamurali brings out her class in the role of a supportive wife who serves to be an inspiration for Maara in many instances. Karunas also plays an important role; there is one scene where his eyes wells up and I'm in awe of that particular scene. Paresh rawal pulls of his role quite effortlessly; being the genius he is. The movie begins at a moderate pace and gives us a few rural melodies composed by the genius that is GV Prakash Kumar. The songs do instill a certain kind of raw and rural feeling in our minds. The movie then moves into the main theme and we get to know a multitude of problems an entrepreneur faces in his quest to build something. Sudha Kongara does a commendable job of not running away from conveying the troubles and adheres to showing a complete picture. The audience who would like this movie would be people who would like something new and original. Everybody may not like it because this is not a film made for entertainment purpose only. This movie gives a lot of depth to its characters and give a bigger scope for acting than commercial movies. That said, modern cinema gives space for both types of movies. Watch the movie with your family and admire this work of art.
