Asassinating Churchill in a rural wartime English village by a platoon of Nazis pretending to be Polish soldiers is the subject of a film that is patently NONSENSICAL & beyond belief. The casting is just ridiculous, Sutherland is merely absurd in his role as a Nazi, not to mention Michael Caine's grasp for an acting paycheck! No doubt viewers with IQs of 70 or less can enjoy this unintelligible, disastrous movie. Total trash.

Never a fan of Cat Stevens or whatever he's calling himself these days. The movie was an endless soliloquy for Ruth Gordon, a little too much, a little too long. The Cort character was hugely boring. Together the couple was possible but improbable and several scenes were possible but improbable as well. An old woman from the Nazi era and a jejune white youth, total strangers, finding enough to keep talking on and on, put me to sleep.

Bogdonovich's only movie of note. Really a good movie that left some serious spaces that needed attention, like where were all the people in this community and why are they missing from the story and where did all the gas and food stores disappear to? Where were Timothy Bottoms parents? At the end of the day, the editing of some excellent acting made the movie great but Bodgonovich was never able to repeat as a director.

In light of what followed for Scorsese film making this is kinda of a rough draft of a genre coming into its own. Commercial, in color, and professionally slick. Not sure why we should care about the cardboard characters. Or their malfeasance. Scorsese definitely giving it the old college try!

Another really good propagandist movie for a war torn world. A little silly in the romance department but an entertaining suspense movie. Hitchcock (assisted by his brilliant wife) was a highly stylized director, a teller of short, tight stories, and one of the greats in the movie business. His early stuff in Europe was ground breaking and reworked over and over to good effect in Hollywood in color and tinseltown stars.

Saw the movie on TCM during Oscar week, April, 2021. Seeing it once was enough. Thought it and "Fargo" were joined at the hip. Except "Fargo" was lots more interesting in both story and movie acting excellence. Bruce Dern? "Nebraska" was simply depressing and black and white film didn't help the emotional and narrative content of a "cinema verite" flick already deep in the weeds with plenty of angst. The naturalistic portrait of an abandoned nation populated by various degrees of thuggish violence and greed and aged undereducated survivors of economic depressions and a world war was a depressing strength of the story. Not my cup of tea. 3 stars for the cinematography and Will Forte.

Ebert knew what he was talking about. Even with all the legitimate comparisons with Singing in the Rain, the film is a rare musical of original once in a lifetime performances.
