The two popes is actually about one pope - Anthony Hopkins. He reigns supreme in this movie about two popes with radically different idealogies. Pope Francis (Jonathan Bryce) is inclusive and wants to expand the reach of the church to all persons, even those who are 'sinners' in the eyes of the traditional church led by Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Anthony Hopkins plays the role exquisitely with a layered performance. Stepping back from a prestigious position with the understanding that the time for change has come must have been tough for thd real pope and Anthony Hopkins portrays the complexity of he character wonderfully. The movie has a relaxed pace and focuses on the dialogue between. two radically different Popes that ultimately leads them to understand that they each have their inner demons and they are not so different after all. The candle flame is a nice touch too. Watch it for the performances and an inside look at the Vatican and its workings.
