My absolute reference has been for the past twenty years or so Leibowitz with the Philharmonia. It still is but out of tens of versions I needed to go through to convince myself I still loved the Best one, somehow I ran into Chailly's selected by who knows who as the best One around. Thus I had to listen to that unknown Director far from the Bohm, Solti, Abbado, Toscanini, and so many others. Never heard of the Leipzig either, well quite unfortunately it appears. That guy was right and Chailly does find "angles" quite unheard before, outstanding instruments that fill in spaces where they'd always and naturally be part of the whole. This distinction reveals very new pleasures quite sensual as well touching the very heart of Beethoven's loving souls. It is like listening to The Symphonies for the first time! Of course nothing is ever added nor substracted in any manner; it is still the very beloved 7th looked at with new glasses to stare at unseen scapes magically appearing from within the same painting you thought knowing by heart.
I had to listen to it a second time to make sure the magic is there and fortunately there are 8 more to go.
Ricardo, Cheers and Thank You!
