Sooooo.... let me start by saying...
I didn't hate it. But I also didn't love it. 😕I prepped for this release. Re-watched the franchise and avoided all promos...reviews and trailers. Like Neo #Matrix 1....I wanted to experience this piece like a new born babe seeing with my true eyes for the first time.... and by end I could almost imagine why nobody would choose the red pill.
This was not a movie for the fans. This was to attract a new viewer. Dumbed and numbed to the patronising PC undertones embedded in the dialogue and in just about every scene. It was too much. I don't want to pick it apart. But here are some key gripes:
1. Did they really need to blend John Wicke look with Neo. Meh. It didn't work.
2. Smith was not the right cast. Instead of sinister and menacing we got a Ken doll doing death stares for the camera at a zombie photos hoot.
3. It had no elegance. No polish. The costumes had no style. We went from high end tailored suits to primark hot pants and vests. There is a fine line between low budget and low rent.... and let's just say lines were crossed. 0 finesse.
4. Morpheus....we didn't need him. Tbh. The actor did a great job... considering it was an almost impossible job..... but he really was not part of the story. Fishburn served outrages dynamic Shakespearean acktoooorrrrr..... and this guy was limited to being an over the top.... slightly camp panto extra.
5. The greatest sin of all.... they killed Neo. He was weak. Feeble. Incapable. Afraid. Reliant. Led. Self serving. Useless in every conceivable way. Diminished to being a background to his girlfriends unfolding Self realisation. Why couldn't he be himself AND she got stronger? I don't get it. *sigh*
I will continue to watch the franchise and really hope they continue... but I feel strongly that the Wowchoski sisters not direct it. A new vision is needed for the new voice that this new franchise is using. The actors were average..... the story line was average.... but worst of all... the action... was average.
But I'm still hopeful
