The movie is high on spectacles but ultimately results in a disjointed mess. JJ Abrams is faced with an impossible task- to course-correct the legacy of Rian Johnson's re-purposing of the franchise into a troll show via The Last Jedi. Unfortunately, the space of merely two and a half hours just isn't enough for him to do it AND tell a coherent story. I wanted to give the movie sympathy points but just can't bring myself to do so.
Also JJ Abrams doesn't seem to understand that the story of the movie is meant for consumption by the audience rather than the fictional population of the movie's fictional universe- at least Rian Johnson has the "excuse" of intending The Last Jedi as a parody. I personally am not that big of a Star Wars fan but watched it out of curiosity, but I doubt that fans of the Original Trilogy are going to take watching the last of the Skywalkers getting wiped out the way they were in this movie too well......
