I feel it is a great shame that it was butchered by the presumably greedy western editors for the release in cinemas in places like London.
It was very obvious that big sections had been removed from the film, and therefore, once again another film on choppy waters because they thought no one would want to sit through a longer version?
I think, anyone who is going to go see Anita in London, would have happily sat through a five hour version, or whatever the original version was/still is! Every single person in this very old cinema, uncomfortable, hard to get to, inaccessible for most screenings, was there not for a "night out" or just to "see whatever", they were there because they wanted to see the much anticipated bio pic of Anita Mui! Sadly, it wasn't even that--a bio pic.
Again, what was the film meant to be? So much of it not connected or seemed irrelevant from one scene to the next, and it made it annoying to watch. Had it been edited properly, and had the dialogue that was very crucial to the film still been in this western released version, it would have been much better!
But somehow even with this film, the first thing when it is being released in the western world, anyone at the top thinks about, is "how much we gonna make". Instead of, "Let's make sure we keep the integrity of the film that was originally given to us, and who knows, it probably will be up for some major awards this season."
I would never give this a nod for best foreign picture, for the basic reason that it got ruined by the people at the top who cared more about money, than sharing someone's life story to the world.
If you really want to watch it, wait until it is more convenient for you on demand, because this cinema showing it is with its limitations, the stereo sound was so ancient, it looked and sounded like the film had been dubbed for just one example.
It certainly was not worth the hiked up prices at this nothing to offer in terms of anything other than that it's there at the moment, because the quality of the screening was that bad....so don't bother to travel all the way to the 1 cinema showing it in a big city because they have no idea whom she was. If Cineworld or Vue put it on, go there, but the Odeon, what in the world was that?
I give it an extra star because of it being for Anita!
You'll find more information, videos, etc. in the older film, the documentaries online and by watching her live concerts on various websites.
Most of what was kept in this particular version, even though it was not flowing at all, was her relationship with Leslie Cheung, there was more about this man's life and death I felt, than hers, and well, maybe with the un-mutilated version, we'd get to see how it all blended in well with the rest of the film, but it just didn't work in this hacked up screening. I really wanted it to be great, but it wasn't. It was bad.
Can I even say the acting was award worthy, when before someone's monologue had ended, they broke it off and skipped to another scene that clearly wasn't meant to be in that order, or that close to what the actors were saying....................... No, I can't.
Humanity, the saddest part is, she seems from what I know, to have been a beautiful soul, and this film does not and never will do her time on this planet--justice. So please, release the original version from a director I am sure is so irate if he has seen what I did.
