This movie is just too deep and too subtle for most people leaving bad reviews because it goes right over their puny heads. This movie Is about the struggle of an artist with his relationship to music. He stops playing music because it becomes linked to his trauma, his musical family dying after going to a gig. He won’t listen to music anymore and goes out on his into the wild voyage to the middle of nowhere to runaway. A black man living in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a guitar he can’t tune or play who might never hear a song again asks him to play, at first he refuses but what might be someone’s everything pushes his music to mean something different to him again. Dirt music has something that the shallow, surface loving generation and New York Times editors and people who leave reviews might not understand since they are critics and not artists. But an artist will understand this movie and the different faces that your art takes based on circumstances. Life forces are our art to mean different things to us in different moments. Your art itself never changes but life is difficult and can put different faces on your art, even the face of your trauma. It is a love story about overcoming, redemption, and music saving a life that no one thought it would.. Follow the music in the movie and it will make more sense.
