If cinematic disappointment had a name, The Electric State would be it. I went in expecting a visually stunning, emotionally gripping dystopian odyssey. What I got was two hours of slow, joyless wandering with characters as lifeless as the robots they travel with.
Millie Bobby Brown might be a talented actress, but even she couldnโt save this painfully hollow script. Her character stumbles from scene to scene with all the emotional depth of a soggy cardboard box. And donโt even get me started on the pacingโimagine watching paint dry, but someone occasionally throws a philosophical monologue at you to make it seem โdeep.โ
The CGI was supposed to be the filmโs saving grace, but even the robots looked like they were animated by interns who were told to โmake it look retroโ and took that as an excuse to skip polishing textures. There were glimpses of a rich, imaginative world here, but theyโre buried under layers of incoherent storytelling, moodless cinematography, and a soundtrack thatโs as forgettable as the movie itself.
This film tries so hard to be profound, but it ends up feeling like a Black Mirror episode stretched far beyond its welcome. If this is the future of cinema, maybe itโs time to unplug.
