Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Historical fiction is what I choose to read, and Allende does a masterful job in this depiction of the Spanish Civil War and the suffering it brought. Love how Allende intertwines her fictional characters Victor and Rosser with real historical figures, Pablo Neruda and Salvador Allende. Learned so many facts about the civil war and the coup d’tat in Chile and where Victor and Rosser are welcomed after their escape. Unfortunately they find peril again, when the fragile democracy is overthrown and the dictator Pinochet takes over. Allende’s prose flows so beautifully. Was never bored with all the facts. Highly recommend.
