Acting: 8 - the whole cast understood the assignment. I think this is now my favorite Ryan Reynolds role. Jodie Comer was a new face to me, and she killed it. Steve Harrington from Stranger Things was great too! Best of all - the real streamers/YouTubers weren’t cringy.
Story: 9 - SO creative. kinda like how Ready Player One was a love letter to classic movies/video games, this movie feels like Matt Lieberman’s love letter to the art of computer programming. It’s smart, the comedy feels natural, and the characters are believable — save for the lazily written antagonist played by Taika Waititi: doesn’t a CEO of a billion dollar company have a board to answer to? still gets a 9 because everything else is near flawless
Visual: 8 - Loved the world of the video game. The transitions between the game and real life were well done. Everybody looked fantastic.
Technical: 8 - shifts in tone were seamless, and scenes had room to breathe.
Audio: 7 - great use of an original score + the occasional pop song. I could see myself listening to the score for fun.
Emotion: 8 - really didn’t think a movie about AI would make me relate, sympathize and root for the AI?? loved every minute of it
