5/5 || The most psychological horror movie you'll ever see. -- I was not completely sold on Hereditary, though it was still a groundbreaking film in a cookie cutter horror movie world. But Midsommar scared me. I'm not talking "ah he popped on to the screen" or "fast running at the camera" scared. I mean, core hitting, heart racing fear where you can't even imagine yourself in such a situation without your palms sweating and whole body freezing. It wasn't full of zombies or exorcisms, but rather people. And that was all the more terrifying. The monsters weren't those who committed suicide (gruesomely) or those who killed the visitors for their culture, but rather, a man who manipulated his girlfriend into believing he was all she had. A man who may not kill people, but has no problem stabbing her in the back. The imagery of open fields, gut wrenching movement, and deceptive drugs cause your mind to become insecure and worked up, all while killing is made casual, and minds are completely lost. This movie makes you extremely uncomfortable, insecure, and scared. A horror movie that I hope will transform our perceptions of fear, and one I will not be seeing again, as it terrified me.
