Panned by the critics but liked by audiences. The film tried to weave together themes of mental illness, racism, relationships and film against a backdrop of 1980s Britain in a faded south coast resort. Olivia Colman was superb ably supported by Toby Jones with Colin Firth and a newcomer Michael Ward.
Hilary, a cinema manager at the seaside cinema is drawn to a younger black boy of Carribean ancestry who has just started working at the cinema. She is bipolar and recently released from hospital after a manic episode. They form an unlikely relationship which plays out to the end of the film when Stephen goes to University I found this moving, amusing and ultimately satisfying despite the unlikely plot. It also emphasised the magic of cinema going.
