There is no doubt that this film steeps itself in sentimental scenes, but being a sentimentalist it had tears freely falling throughout.
I can see why some critics panned aspects of the setting, but I tended to see the family through Wain’s eyes rather than a true representation, which contrasted nicely with the unlikely but tender relationship that ‘electrically’ developed tween him and the governess that was so delightfully credible and liberated him in every sense.
Cumberbatch’s representation of adoring love, inconsolable grief and encroaching madness was what prompted those unexpected tears (Peter had a part in it too cos yeh, I like cats). Def worth a watch.
