A story that reimagines historical events in modern, outrageous and queer ways can work - I'm thinking The Favourite. And a comedy filled with characatures can be moving, interesting and funny - I'm thinking Wes Anderson. But this show gets every element wrong, in an admittedly hard-to-pull-off genre - dramatically unmoving, thematically predictable and clumsy, jarringly broadly acted, and utterly unfunny. On the plus side, it moves along jauntily.
