An absolutely marvellous tale of feeling animals in an harsh alien environment. Some spectacular theoretical biology. Definitely recommend if you like something that really makes you think.
However I would not recommend it for people who have a hard time with moral greyness and big words. It’s not a book that holds your hand. It’s a tale about people through the lense of an alien race. And I’d say it criticizes a lot of humanity, if you can’t handle that then don’t read.
Most of the poor reception from this book comes from people either completely missing the point or hyper-fixating on the gore. When there is so much more to it: there’s hope, friendship and love. Some of my favourite parts of it are the teamwork and silliness between these animal friends.
As a disabled queer person, it was amazing to see so much of myself portrayed in these characters. The book doesn’t coddle people with disabilities, and portrays them being just as capable as the other kivs even if they’ve had to struggle to get where they are. I highly recommend the audiobook if you have a hard time reading! It helps a lot and is narrated by the author.
